Long before today’s modern round brilliant diamond, there was the old European cut. First popular in the 1890s – an era when cutting was done by hand and diamonds were designed to sparkle by candlelight – the Old European remained in vogue until the 1930s, when technology advanced further and resulted in the uniform faceting in what we now call the modern round brilliant.

In recent years, the desire for the understated elegance and vintage charm of Old European stones has returned. Many antique Old European diamonds were re-cut in the modern style, making beautifully cut old European diamonds exceedingly difficult to find, especially in the colorless and near colorless range.
