About Art Nouveau
1890s-1910The Art Nouveau movement first took hold in Paris in the late 19th Century, with sensuous, organic forms shaping decorative arts and architecture. Art Nouveau celebrated themes of nature and the feminine form, a revolt against the industrial age and its classical, formulaic designs. Hand craftsmanship and naturalism were championed over precious materials and overt displays of wealth. Colorful enameling techniques, moonstone, carved horn and other natural elements reflected the artisan’s skill. This was the beginning of the jewelry designer as named artist.
